I particularly like this trailer because the genre of horror is clearly shown but it also has some sort of psychological in depth meaning to it that not many other horror films have. The trailer begins with an everyday family man seeing to his children, it then fades to the next scene in which he is being shown around his new job; this particular scene is very important as it is shown to be dark and quite sinister with low key lighting. The music in both of the first scenes is very light and quite heartfelt. We then delve into the serious part of the trailer where the horror genre is introduced, we know this because the music is significantly faster, screechy and sinister; At this point of the trailer the cuts begin to appear faster and we begin to hear some sort of scream, the music also gets louder. As the trailer continues we begin to realise that his place of work is the source of the sinister happenings, we can relate to and understand this because of the second scene being in the dark and sinister setting of his place of work; As the trailer continues the story begins to unfold, he investigates about the death of the previous guard of the job he has replaced, this is where the cuts get faster and we are even shown the death of the previous guard and realise that it is the mirrors which are controlling and making the events happen. We are then shown a series of deaths and scary scenes, we then get towards the end of the trailer which are even faster clips with a very loud sound which really makes your heart beat and even gets you scared. I really like this trailer because it exceeds your expectations, it's quite psychological and unusual in terms of a horror film because there is a lot more to it than your general scary murderer on the loose on a killing spree.
This trailer for Mirrors uses some of the common conventions of a movie trailer such as:
- The trailer indicates the genre of the movie very clearly because it uses a lot of the common conventions of the horror movie genre such as; Low lighting, clips of horrific scenes, scenes of a mysterious and unsettling nature.
- The name of the movie is shown and in this case it's a good effect of how it is shown, there is shards of a mirror falling and the name is mirrored above itself and then disappears to show the main text.
- The only production values are shown at the very end of the movie, this shows that it is quite a low budget film as there is no main, well known director etc.
- The trailer definitely picks out certain clips that will interest the audience. eg. Using very mysterious and scary scenes to intice the audience.
- The music that is used in the trailer is very emotive and starts quite fluttery yet sinister and then continues to have an intense build up.
- There is no voice over on this trailer.
Good analysis of why you like it Katie.
